The new Fire Station/Maintenance Facility is located at Central Avenue between L and M St SW. The total square footage of the building will be 29,700 sq. ft. with areas for administration, vehicle maintenance, response apparatus, training/community meeting room and resident sleeping quarters. Our current building was constructed in 1959. At that time Grant County Fire District #3 owned 5 pieces of equipment. Today we have 15 pieces of firefighting equipment in service at the Quincy headquarters station itself. There are another 24 pieces of apparatus of all types in the surrounding district stations. All of this equipment is maintained and serviced at the main station. Last year there were over 500 responses of all types. We encounter many types of incidents. A structure fire requires pumpers, tankers and salvage support, wildland fires require 4 wheel drive brush trucks and tankers, vehicle accidents require rescue, medical and pumper trucks. It may seem like we have too much equipment, but the variety of calls and the many simultaneous multiple alarms dictate the way we respond.

The exterior of the building will be colored metal with a colored metal roof, fascia and soffit. For added appeal there will be a decorative amount of masonry block on the building. This will help to make the building more appealing from the highway and reduce maintenance on the building.

A great deal of consideration was given to the maintenance/energy efficiency of the building materials as well as improvement of highway access. The interior of the apparatus bays will be a combination of plywood and vinyl coated exposed insulation, with the administration and resident quarters sheet rock. The size of the apparatus bays will be approximately 16 ft. wide x 79 ft. long. Over the years as equipment has improved it has also increased in size. Today our apparatus may be larger in size but is also much more efficient. A vehicle may fit into a smaller bay but Washington State Labor and Industries safety standards mandate the size of the free space areas surrounding the apparatus for the safety of our firefighters mounting and dismounting these vehicles.

As in all new construction there are several codes and standards that the fire district is required to meet. Indoor air quality standards dealing with exhaust fumes, non-slip floors and of course fire codes must be met. All of these issues deal with firefighter safety. There are many other issues similar to this that are included in the costs of construction. A required decontamination room for medical equipment and post incident decon of hazardous substances from equipment for example.

A very important part of this project will be a training/meeting room. This will be an 1800 sq. ft. room that will allow for improved training opportunities for the firefighters that protect our community. We will also be able to host regional training exercises and invite firefighters from other areas to participate.

An additional wing of the building will be devoted to the maintenance and repair of apparatus. This will cover 3528 sq. ft. which will be for two maintenance bays. The fire district currently rents a building for this purpose and will not be needed when the construction of this facility is finished. This will help to centralize all of our manpower and apparatus improving response times to incidents.

An emergency standby generator is also a required part of the project; this will be needed to open apparatus bay doors and other needs during power outages. We currently have a generator that will be used for this purpose.

The goal for this new facility is to improve emergency services for our communities. An excellent method for this is to develop a resident/sleeper program. A resident is typically a college student who is allowed to live at the station and in return is to provide a response service back to the community. This will reduce response times to incidents at no cost to the public. This facility will improve response times to your emergencies. It will also help us operate more efficiently.
